It’s a Conspiracy

Feb 13, 2019

To the Editor:

Bill Bonvie weaves a fantastical conspiracy theory about President Trump (“Method to the Madness: Shutdown Perhaps Had More Than One Aim,” 1/30). He suggests that Trump’s government shutdown was not just to leverage for the border wall, but to also cause a permanent reduction in the government workforce through sustained frustration, thereby trimming down the budget – a calculated double whammy. Can Trump really be such a sly fox?

I’m not delighted with the shutdown, but Trump is not unique in this. There have been 21 shutdowns in U.S. history: most recently in 1980 (Ronald Reagan), 1995 (Bill Clinton) and 2013 (Barack Obama). It’s just how the game is played.

Mr. Bonvie describes the building of a border wall as “an idea originally devised by Trump’s aides to give him a talking point” and to channel their “xenophobia and rejection of diversity.” Not! Trump and his aides stole this idea from Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Chuck Schumer, Nancy Pelosi, et al. Just a couple years ago, these Democrats proposed spending $25 billion on border fencing.

So, what changed? Did this gang of leftists suddenly overcome their xenophobia and bigotry? Why was a barrier a good idea when it was their idea, and an immoral, costly and ineffective folly when Trump calls for it?

It’s not that I can’t find some fault with Trump, nor have I always voted for Republicans. What’s so appalling to me is the magnitude of unreasoning and hypocritical condemnation of the man, the inane oppositionalism, the cult-like fever pitch of hatred infecting so many minds, and being bandied wholesale by celebrities as well.

Add to that the indignity of the discourse: the potty-mouthed spewings of Rosie O’Donnell, Kathy Griffin, Peter Fonda, the whoops of racism charges by Whoopi Goldberg, and the new, fashionable denunciation of the white race by whites (wow!) like Joyce Behar. Oh, and the shameless blurt of Democratic Rep. Rashida Tlaib: “Impeach the motherf***er!” Am I having a bad dream? These clowns should thank God that this is America, and not Russia or North Korea, where they’d likely be silenced by a firing squad.

Mr. Bonvie describes illegal immigrants as “badly needed migrant workers and those fleeing desperate and dangerous situations.” He claims that there’s no sudden, dire emergency on our southern border to warrant this shutdown. I might even agree on that one. The fact that there are already millions of illegal immigrants living here makes it almost a joke to call it anything sudden.

How about describing it as Bill Clinton did in his 1995 State of the Union Address: “All Americans … are rightly disturbed by the large numbers of illegal aliens entering our country. The jobs they hold might otherwise be held by citizens or legal immigrants. The public service they use impose burdens on our taxpayers ...”? Or how about Barack Obama in his 2013 State of the Union Address: “Real reform means stronger border security” ... “putting more boots on the southern border”... “passing background checks” ... “going to the back of the line behind the folks trying to come here legally.”

In case anyone needs reminding, the much-bemoaned picture of migrant kids “in cages” was from the Obama era. Yet you can still turn on the television and catch Mika Brzezinski caterwauling about Trump “tearing babies from their mothers’ arms at the border.”

A border wall (or wall segments at the most strategic points), according to the sage advice of ICE agents, would not only reduce the migrant flow, but would deter these same mothers and babies from crossing dangerous, vast, arid, snake-filled terrain. And 300 Americans dying weekly from just one illegal drug coming over the border is more than an emergency – it amounts to a war against us.

Sanctuary cities and states that harbor criminal aliens and help them escape ICE are beyond anarchy – they constitute treason.

There is only one reason why Democrats have other border security ideas, and it is not their love of diversity or their heartfelt concern for third-worlders. It is that they plan to connive for the vote of illegal aliens, as well as prison inmates. Then they want to do away with the Electoral College. Combine these tactics with the votes of all the ne’er-do-wells who want every handout, and it’s a slam-dunk for the left ... and a disaster for America. That is a conspiracy.
