Jake DuBois, Thomas Foster Keys to Southern Rams’ Hoops Success

Dec 08, 2017

The Southern Regional High School Rams’ success for the upcoming season could lie in the hands of senior guard Jake DuBois, who enters the campaign with 635 career points. Last season, DuBois averaged 15 points, four rebounds and three assists per game for a Rams squad that went 11-15 (15-9) in the A-South.

“Our team comes into the season well prepared mentally and physically,” said head coach Eric Fierro. “We are working to be ready to compete in a tough class A-South and early non-divisional schedule. We are excited for the scrimmage portion of the season to determine where we can improve most before opening night.”

The Rams will have to replace guard Mark Velariani, one of the top Shore Conference three point shooters, who has graduated. Also lost to graduation were forwards Matt Mershon and Billy Howard.

Fierro said the Rams will also be leaning on senior forward Thomas Foster, who averaged 10 points and six rebounds per game. At 6-5 he is the tallest of the starting five.

“Johnny Tilton (junior forward) broke into the starting line up the second half of last season,” he said. “Auggie Gugliemini (senior forward) and Cole Markley (junior guard) also return with varsity experience.”

Other returnees include junior guards Vinnie Deck, Joseph Infurna and Cole Markley, and junior forward Joseph Guglielmo.

Newcomers include senior forward Alex Tcheevev, sophomore forwards Cole Robinson and Noah Wasacz, junior guard Alex Manno and sophomore guard Will DeVane.

The Rams open the season at home on Saturday, Dec. 16, at 1 p.m. against Atlantic County Institute of Technology. The first conference game is at home on Tuesday, Dec. 19, at 6:30. On Thursday, Dec. 21, they have a road contest against Central Regional.

Southern is also hosting the Score at the Shore holiday tournament with games scheduled Saturday, Dec. 23, Tuesday, Dec. 26, Wednesday, Dec. 27, and Friday, Dec. 29. Seedings will be announced on Sunday, Dec. 10.

Other schools in the tourney include Jackson Liberty, Holy Spirit, Pleasantville, Notre Dame of Lawrenceville, Mainland Regional, Monmouth Regional, Lenape Regional, St. Joseph’s of Metuchen and Asbury Park.
