James Maloney of Little Egg Harbor is the Pine Shores Art Association’s featured artist in the gallery for January. Using transparent watercolors and water media gouache, he has exhibited a wealth of beautiful subjects including fanciful koi, local game fish and boating scenes. “When his architect’s eye for detail and his love for marine biology combine, he produces prize-winning paintings of depth and feeling,” said a PSAA press release.

Maloney’s educational background includes the High School of Art and Design in NYC, a B.S. and master’s from City College of New York, and an MBA from Pace University. It was not until he and his wife retired to Sea Oaks five years ago that he seriously sought to develop his love for sketching and drawing and began classes at Pine Shores.

The fact that he has been been working in watercolor for only 4½ years adds to the marvel of his work. During this time, he has won prestigious awards including a first-place ribbon in the Professional Watercolor category of the Ocean County Senior Show and the PSAA Alex Stillano Memorial Award during the Art Harvest Show.

Maloney paints what he loves and has said of his work, “The fish are easy; it’s the surroundings that are hard.”

A wide range of this prolific artist’s work can be viewed at the gallery at 94 Stafford Ave. in Manahawkin. The gallery is open Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and Sundays from 1 to 3 p.m.. —P.J.
