The 2017 Jazz Cocktail Hour series at the Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts and Sciences in Loveladies opens on Sunday, July 2, with vocalist Rhenda Fearrington and her quartet performing the songs of Roberta Flack and Nina Simone.

Fearrington has traveled the world as a jazz performer and backup singer for Flack and Mtume. After performing with many greats including Lou Rawls, Peabo Bryson, Lionel Ritchie and The Commodores, and Chaka Kahn, she turned her interest back to promoting Philadelphia jazz. Her mission is to bring the importance of the Philadelphia jazz culture and its contribution to America to a much wider audience. She does this in part by using her social media persona, “The Sista in the Front,” as she continues to share her singing gift. The Rhenda Fearrington Quartet includes Chris Simonini on keys, Nimrod Speaks on bass and Keith Hollis on drums.

Hostess Sara Michaels is a jazz vocalist and promoter who is passionate about sharing the history of jazz and introducing contemporary jazz artists to LBI.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m., with a half-hour mingling session followed by an hour-long performance by Fearrington and her quartet starting at 7, followed by a Q&A session with the band and people behind the scenes.

Sound for the Cocktail Hour will be provided locally by Rock Solid Productions and is sponsored by Benée Scola Realtors & Co.

Tickets are $30 at the door or $25 online at lbifoundation.org. Adult tickets include two cocktails. For students, tickets are just $10 and include one beverage. Last year, the series sold out, so don’t delay.

The next jazz cocktail hour presents Lynn Riley and The World Mix on Sunday, July 30, at 6:30, and the final one will be held Sunday, Aug. 20, also at 6:30, featuring Sara Michaels’ own quartet.  —V.F.
