The indoor track season concluded this past weekend with the NJSIAA Meet of Champions, and a half-dozen Southern Regional athletes were among the crowd of competitors inside the Bennett Center in Toms River.

In the boys’ meet on Feb. 25, Southern senior Joe Miele, who had won the South Jersey Group IV shot put title two weeks earlier, recorded a high throw of 47 feet, 8¾ inches but wasn’t able to crack the top-20, as he finished 23rd behind Hackensack’s Jack Stuart, who tossed the shot put 48 feet, 10¾ inches. Gill-St. Bernard’s C.J. Licata won the championship with a toss of 62 feet, 7¾ inches.

In her first Meet of Champions 1,600-meter run a day earlier, sophomore Karagan Bulger crossed the finish line with a time of 5:19.06 to place 26th, a second and a half behind Mount Olive junior Sydney Bradie. Middletown South senior Madison Brand blazed her way to victory in 4:56.96.

Bulger also competed alongside teammates Caitlin Hambor, Brookelle Kline and Maria Mezzo in the 4x400-meter relay and raced to a time of 4:09.07 – a full second ahead of their seeded time of 4:10.10 – and placed 24th, a half-second behind the crew from Paramus Catholic. Union Catholic’s quartet won the title with a time of 3:56.90. —D.B.
