Joseph Lopes is the newest member of the Barnegat Township Committee, as officials appointed him to serve the last year of Susan McCabe’s term. She recently stepped down from the all-Republican committee to become the municipality’s labor counsel/human resources director and conflict attorney.

Lopes took the oath of office and assumed his seat at the Feb. 6 meeting. An embroiderer and screen printer by trade, the 59-year-old Lopes is owner of Simple T’s and Dot Graphics, both located on Route 9 in Barnegat.

He and his wife, Celeste, moved from Newark to West Creek in 2005 and then relocated to Barnegat in 2013 in the Heritage Point development.

“I started to get an interest in the town, and when this opening came up, I thought I’d give it a try,” said Lopes. “I know I’ll have to run in November to keep the seat, so I’ll have some time to see if I like it.”

The committee had also considered Tripp Rogers and William Cox, former school board and township committee candidates, respectively.

The new committeeman said he’ll be able to devote time to his new post as he is stepping back from day-to-day operations at his businesses.

“Being a businessman in town can help me in talking with people who are interested in having a business in Barnegat,” he said. “A lot of politicians don’t have that kind of business experience, so I think my experience there can be an asset.”

“I think he’ll be fine,” said Deputy Mayor Alfionso Cirulli. “He has the committee’s full support, and his experience as a business owner should help him.” E.E.
