Junior Olympic Festival at BBYC Sets Summer Sailing Season in Motion

Jun 28, 2017

Surf City Yacht Club sailor Bridget Green knows a thing or two about sailing Optimist boats. After all, she recently competed as part of Team USA in the South American Opti Championship held in Paraguay, where the American squad captured gold.

Locally, Green has been blazing paths on Barnegat Bay for years, and she did so again this past weekend during the Junior Olympic Festival at Brant Beach Yacht Club, cruising to the Optimist-class title with seven points. As part of the Red fleet, Green won the first four races of the seven-race regatta and capped her winning effort with a first in the last race on June 25.

Behind Green was Surf City’s Ryan Ehnot, who totaled 13 points following a pair of victories in the fifth and sixth races. Little Egg Harbor Yacht Club’s Adra Ivancich scored 14 points to take third overall, while Brant Beach’s James Iorio was fourth with 23 points and LEHYC’s Aiden Millar swiped fifth with 30 points. Rounding out the top 10 were LEHYC’s John Bishop in sixth, BBYC’s Charlie Weinstein in seventh, Spray Beach Yacht Club’s Connor McHugh in ninth and Dillon Millar of LEHYC in 10th.

In the Laser Radial class, Thomas Quinn of Bay Head Yacht Club won the regatta with eight points, while Surf City Yacht Club’s Lauren Ehnot took the second spot with 12 points. Matthew Rossignol of Surf City Yacht Club was the only other local among the top five, placing fourth with 21 points.

Meanwhile, the top two in the Laser 4.7 class consisted of Brant Beach Yacht Club sailors – Cameron Miller, who won with seven points, and Payton Kliesch, who finished with 10 points.

Of course, with summer just getting into gear, the Junior Olympic Festival was just one of many local sailing events on the agenda during the coming months.

Coming up on Thursday, July 6, Surf City Yacht Club will host the annual Junior Commodore’s Regatta, featuring boats in the C420, Laser Radial/4.7, Sunfish and Optimist classes. The following week, on Thursday and Friday, July 13 and 14, SCYC will host the C420 New Jersey State Championship. On Sunday, July 23, SCYC is slated to host the Lightning New Jersey State Junior Championship.

For those Optimist sailors who are LBI Yacht Racing Association members, the Green Fleet Regatta series will be held on three consecutive Tuesdays – July 25 as well as Aug. 1 and 8. The first of that series is the “Independence Day” Regatta at Barnegat Light Yacht Club, while the next in the series will be the Faye Bennett Regatta at Spray Beach Yacht Club, and the final one is set to be the “No Fear” Regatta at Surf City Yacht Club.

On Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 12 and 13, Little Egg Harbor Yacht Club will host its annual Down Bay Regatta for A-Cat, B-Cat, E Scow and Lightning boats. The following week, on Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 21 and 22, Surf City is scheduled to host the Laser Radial/4.7 District 10 Championships.

Rounding out the season for the local regattas will be the Sunfish Youth World Championships Aug. 23-26 and the Sunfish World Championships on Aug. 26-Sept. 1 at Brant Beach Yacht Club.
