Kiwanis ‘Happy Feet’ Sock Collection Drive Underway

Jul 26, 2017

After the success of last year’s inaugural drive, the Kiwanis of LBI/Manahawkin recently announced another “Happy Feet” collection program through which new socks are being collected for children in need, homeless veterans and victims of domestic abuse.

“Along with our other Kiwanis family members, the Key Club and Builders Club at Southern Regional High School and MATES, new socks are being collected through Dec. 3,” said Faith Dixon, project coordinator. “We collected 3,650 pairs of socks, and the goal this year is to collect 6,000 pairs of socks to be distributed to children in need, homeless, homeless veterans, active military, victims of domestic abuse and Hope for Liberia. The Kiwanis family is devoted to improving the lives of children and the communities they live in.”

Dixon said a warm pair of socks is the most sought-after item among homeless in the United States. Clean socks prevent many common ailments and reduce bacteria and medical problems as well as warming cold feet and bringing dignity to a person’s life.

She said socks, as well as underwear, are often left out of clothing drives.

“I had heard about an underwear collection, so I thought that maybe we could collect socks,” Dixon said.

The drop-off destinations for the new socks will be: Bay Avenue Community Center, 775 East Bay Ave., Manahawkin; Berkshire Hathaway Zack Shore Realtors, 1000 Long Beach Blvd., Ship Bottom; Between the Sheets, 1012 Central Ave., Ship Bottom; the Dixon residence, 510 Shore Ave., Ship Bottom; Harvey Cedars Borough Hall, 7606 Long Beach Blvd., Harvey Cedars; Pine Street Community Center, 23 Pine St., Manahawkin (behind the Bay Avenue Community Center); Ship Bottom Borough Hall, Municipal Clerk’s Office, 1621 Long Beach Blvd., Ship Bottom; St. Peter’s at the Light Church, Seventh Street and Central Ave., Barnegat Light; Octopus’s Garden, 771 South Main St. (Route 9), West Creek; and Trident Fitness & Performance, 541 South Main St. (Route 9), West Creek.

In addition, donations will be accepted at the free summer outdoor concerts in Harvey Cedars at Sunset Park on Wednesdays through Aug. 16 and in Ship Bottom at the waterfront park on Thursdays through Aug 17.
