After midnight Saturday night, a hit-and-run incident involving a police patrol car occurred on Route 9 near the high school. Stafford Township Ptl. Joseph Luna was on a routine motor vehicle stop when a 2011 silver Ford Edge traveling north on Route 9 struck his patrol car and kept going.

Police caught up with the driver, William D. Dippolito, 31, of Lanoka Harbor, 2 miles up the road at the intersection of Mary Bell Road and Route 9 in Barnegat, according to the police report. He was stopped by Stafford Special Law Enforcement Officer Zach Wiatrowski, who joined the Stafford force just last month, with assistance from Ptls. Jacob Conner and Giovanni DeMarco.

Dippolito was arrested on the scene for driving while intoxicated. He was processed at Stafford police headquarters and later released. He was issued numerous summonses, including DWI, leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident and failing to report a motor vehicle accident.

Luna was not injured; his patrol vehicle was towed from the scene. —V.F.
