LBI Beaches See Guarding Changes After Labor Day

Aug 29, 2018

The arrival of Labor Day brings changes in lifeguard coverage to all towns on LBI. The public is strongly urged to use only guarded beaches. Coverage is from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

In Barnegat Light, six beaches are scheduled to be guarded Labor Day weekend: 30th, 27th, 25th, 22nd, 15th and Ninth streets. The number of beaches is based upon the number of lifeguards who are known to be coming back from school to work the beaches that weekend.

There are others who are possibly coming back; if they do, the 19th Street beach would also be patrolled.

After Labor Day, only 22nd Street would be guarded, for as long as money remains in the budget; that is unknown at this date, borough officials said.

Beach Haven swimming beaches will be guarded at Centre Street on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 8-9 and Sept. 15-16. Beach Patrol Capt. Mike Lawrence said other beaches could be guarded, depending on how much staff is available. Mobile patrols on quads will also be used.

In Harvey Cedars, Beach Patrol Capt. Randy Townsend said that after Labor Day, the beaches at Middlesex Avenue and 80th Street will be guarded each day through Sunday, Sept. 9. Beginning Monday, Sept. 10, the Middlesex Avenue beach will be guarded each day through Sunday, Sept. 30. The 80th Street beach will be guarded on weekends during that same stretch if there are favorable weather conditions.

“We’re also going to have mobile patrols concentrating on areas where we do not have guards,” Townsend said.

After Labor Day, Long Beach Township will have guards on just one beach, 68th Street in Brant Beach, with coverage only on Saturday and Sunday, through September.

The Ship Bottom beaches will have daily coverage at Seventh, 15th and 20th streets through Sept. 30.

Surf City will have guards at the 12th Street beach through Sept. 9. —Staff Report
