Electrical equipment on an Atlantic City Electric pole caught fire Monday morning, knocking out power to more than 2,000 customers in Ship Bottom and Surf City.

“The issue was with faulty equipment on the pole that slowly burned the inside of the pole. It was not visible from the outside,” Frank Tedesco, spokesman for Atlantic City Electric, said, noting power was restored within an hour of the 10 a.m. fire to 2,031 customers. Power to scattered and lingering outages was restored fully by 5 p.m., he said.

In Ship Bottom, the pole fire knocked out traffic signals at the circle coming on and off the Island. Borough police diverted traffic off Barnegat Avenue North to 10th Street and south at Seventh Street to keep Route 72 flowing normally, Sgt. Michael Nash said.

“The signals were back up and running within the hour, and there were no accidents as a result of fast, efficient police work,” he said.  —G.G.S.
