LBI School District Budget Raises Taxes for All Sending Towns Except Ship Bottom

May 03, 2017

The Long Beach Island Board of Education’s 2017-18 budget will raise taxes for homeowners in all the district’s sending municipalities except for Ship Bottom. “The rateables in that town had a significant increase,” said school district Business Administrator Megan Gally, “and due to that, Ship Bottom will realize a decrease in taxes.”

Total budget expenditures amount to $7,537,582, up from $6,980,442 last year, and include increases in health benefits and energy costs, and capital expenses such as pre-referendum services. After taking into account various external revenue sources – federal grants, state aid, reserve, tuition and miscellaneous income – the local tax levy comes in at $6,172,325.

As Gally’s presentation explained, “$119,384 banked cap will be used in the 2017-18 budget to increase the 2017-18 tax levy.” The allowable local tax levy increase is capped at 2 percent above the prior school year tax levy.

Based on a $500,000 assessed home value, annual school taxes in each of the five sending municipalities will be as follows: Barnegat Light, $227.50, an increase of $8.50; Harvey Cedars, $226.50, an increase of $6; Long Beach Township, $241.50, an increase of $8; Surf City, $232.00, an increase of $2; and Ship Bottom, $222, a decrease of $14.50.

As part of the budget presentation, Superintendent Peter Kopack discussed district initiatives and goals for the next school year, including: maintaining current staff, programs and services; enhanced STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) instruction; district-wide professional development; new extracurriculars, such as fitness clubs; Chrome Books for grades three and four; and facilities maintenance.

The next regular meeting of the school board is 7 p.m. May 23 in the media center of the Ethel A. Jacobsen School, at 200 South Barnegat Ave. in Surf City.
