A business that dates back to the early 1970s in North Jersey is taking up shop in Beach Haven. Lenny and John’s Subs will be located at 2205 South Bay Ave. (near the Holgate border) in a building that once housed the Juice House and Black Dog Café.

Mireille Antinozzi, co-owner with her husband, Robert Antinozzi, said her father-in-law, Leonard Antinozzi, and uncle John Maselli opened up the first Lenny and John’s in Bloomfield in 1971. The couple took over that establishment in 2008; four years later, they opened a second location in Kenilworth.

“Our dream has always been to open up a deli on LBI, after vacationing there with our two children for the past 10 years,” said Mireille. “After becoming friends with the Netta family of The Black Dog Café, we were given the amazing opportunity to open in their location. We plan to bring back some of the old Black Dog Café staples.”

She said Lenny and John’s, which is looking to open in time for Memorial Day weekend, has always been known as being an old-fashioned sandwich shop.

“The bread is delivered fresh daily. We use quality meats and vegetables, and they are dressed with just the right amount of oil and vinegar,” said Mireille.

She said the establishment is best known for its tuna sub.

“It is a secret recipe that is made fresh daily, and usually sells out. It has consistently been recognized as the best tuna sub in New Jersey by many, including Peter Genovese of the Star Ledger and the Munch Mobile.”

The Beach Haven business will also offer breakfast, homemade desserts and espresso. While the complete menu is not finalized, she said people can check the website lennyandjohnssubs.com/ to find out the subs and other menu items offered. —E.E.
