June 30 Event Also in Memory of Ship Bottom’s Tom Oakley
May 24, 2017

Claim a spot soon for the 25th annual – and final – Ron Emmert Invitational Golf Tournament, scheduled for June 30. Limited tickets are available for the event, to be held at Sea Oaks Golf Club in Little Egg Harbor Township.

The tournament, which benefits Southern Regional High School sports programs, is named for former teacher and football coach Emmert, who passed away in March 2014. Emmert began working at Southern in 1964, taking over as head coach of the football team in 1971, after serving as an assistant. He was at the helm until 1986, then returned as an assistant coach again in 1994, remaining with the team until around 1997.

Friends, former players and fellow coaches described Emmert as a fair, honest family man with great integrity, conviction and athletic talent.

“I was very fortunate to be Coach Emmert’s captain of the 1977 football team,” remarked Mike Kaiser, president of the Southern 33 Athletic Club, which hosts the golf tourney. “Being coached by him made everything in my life easier because he was such a great leader.”

On the occasion of the dedication of Southern’s football field in Emmert’s name, longtime friend and fellow teacher and coach Tony Sermarini said Emmert was a dedicated coach who treated his players like he treated his family – he listened, he gave advice, he showed compassion. “He did everything right. Everything was above board.”

“He was a great football coach, and … also a really good person,” said another close friend and colleague, Dave DiEugenio.

This year’s event is also in memory of George Thomas Cranmer Oakley, a longtime Ship Bottom resident, and a beloved, civicly active member of the Long Beach Island community. Oakley passed away in October 2016, at age 92.

Oakley was a past president, and 65-year member, of the Ship Bottom Volunteer Fire Co., as well as a past president of the Rotary Club of LBI and the Southern Ocean County Chamber of Commerce. He also served as a Ship Bottom councilman and borough historian, and sat on both the LBI and Southern Regional school boards.

“Tom was very fond of Southern Regional,” Kaiser noted. “And he was close to Coach Emmert. He was friends with all our coaches.”

As Oakley’s obituary read, “Nothing gave him greater pleasure than attending Southern Regional High School sports … with his son-in-law Stacy.” The tribute also thanked all the Rams coaches throughout the years.

The June golf tournament – a “Nine and Dine” – will place 72 golfers on the front nine holes at Sea Oaks, and 72 golfers on the back nine. The four-man team winners of each will meet at Hole 18 to decide the championship.

Check-in begins at 1 p.m., and includes a putting contest to benefit Brian Malast, a New Jersey state trooper who was critically injured in a 2005 motor vehicle accident en route to a call in Bordentown, as Kaiser explained.

The shotgun tee-off is at 2:30 p.m.

A cocktail hour and dinner – “surf and turf, and all the fixings,” said Kaiser – will follow the tournament.

Tickets for the tournament and dinner are $125 per person. Cost is $50 to attend just the cocktail hour and dinner.

For tickets, call Kaiser at 609-384-1511. —J.K.-H.
