Little Egg Harbor December Police Blotter

SWAT Called: On Friday, Dec. 21, at 2:39 p.m., Little Egg Harbor police were dispatched to a residence in the Cranberry Creek development by a woman who said her 50-year-old son was destroying her residence, had not taken his medication and had been drinking alcohol, and was now holding a knife and threatening “suicide by cop.”

The police first escorted the woman safely from the house and then established a perimeter around the home.

The Ocean County Regional SWAT Team and crisis negotiators were contacted and responded to the scene along with the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office and Ocean County Sheriff’s Department.

SWAT officers were eventually able to take the man, Kurt Tyhanic, safely into custody.

Tyhanic was treated at Southern Ocean Medical Center and later transported to the Ocean County Jail, where he was processed and served with a warrant and summons. Tyhanic was charged with possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose, unlawful possession of a weapon, criminal mischief, aggravated assault on police, obstruction, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Police Chief Richard Buzby thanked the residents of Cranberry Creek for their patience and assistance in this matter.

Joyeux Noel: Christmas Eve, Dec. 24, at 1:45 p.m., the Ship Bottom police arrested Daniel Natoli, a Little Egg Harbor man wanted by that jurisdiction for two complaints of joyriding in stolen vehicles. Natoli was taken to Little Egg Harbor police and charged with receiving stolen property, vehicle burglary, and joyriding in two vehicles on two separate occasions. He was lodged in the Ocean County Jail and later released following a detention hearing.

Three Carjackers Found: Little Egg Harbor Patrolwoman Erica Bonfiglio spotted a stolen car in the township that was wanted in an alleged carjacking in Atlantic City on Dec. 17. The occupants of the car were taken into custody for questioning. AC detectives responded to Little Egg to continue their investigation and arrested three individuals. It is alleged that 18-year-old Shawn McCann, 19-year-old Talibah McCoy and a 16-year-old minor, all of Atlantic City, were part of a carjacking and assault of a Lyft driver in Atlantic City. The two adults were charged with robbery, carjacking, unlawful possession of a weapon, aggravated assault and employing a juvenile in the commission of a crime.

Great Fuzz: On Dec. 5, as part of their no-shave November effort, Little Egg Harbor Township police officers presented a check to the Fox Chase Cancer Research Center in the amount of $1,800 from PBA Local #295. This was in the name and memory of Tuckerton Police Cpl. Matthew Caufield.
