Local Gymnasts, Runners Solid at Shore Conference Championship Meets

Nov 01, 2017

Besides the state championship meet, the Shore Conference Gymnastics Championships is one of the toughest competitions in New Jersey. To win as a team often takes five stellar gymnasts scoring well at a high level of difficulty, while winning the all-round as an individual – or any of the single events – is an outstanding achievement.

Well, Southern Regional or Barnegat gymnasts didn’t win big on Oct. 28, but they didn’t disappoint either. As the Rams finished 12th as a team with 103.475 points, the Bengals’ Kylie Picaro solidified her place as one of the top-20 gymnasts in the conference by tallying an all-around score of 35.525, good enough for 18th place overall.

Picaro tied for eighth on the vault with a score of 9.5, placed 34th on the uneven bars with an 8.375, was 41st on the balance beam with an 8.450 and finished off with a 9.2 during her floor exercise, placing 19th.

Meanwhile, Southern’s big efforts started with Maria Mezzo, who placed 25th overall among all-around gymnasts with a 34.825. Mezzo placed 22nd on the vault with a 9.275, scored an 8.050 on the bars and an 8.1 on the beam, followed by an eighth-place spot on the floor with a 9.4.

Placing 28th all-around with a 34.525, Gabi Conforti took 24th on the vault with a 9.2, scored a 7.725 on the bars, added an 8.8 on the beam and completed her efforts with an 8.8 on the floor. Hailey Klimas, who finished 35th all-around with a 33.825, scored an 8.725 on the vault, a 7.175 on the bars, an 8.750 on the beam and a 20th-place score of 9.175 on the floor.

Several other Rams contributed to the team scoring as well. Autumn Shackleton was solid on the vault, placing 35th with an 8.975, and the floor exercise, placing 39th with an 8.850, while Gianna Antinora and Sara Possidel each scored an 8.5 on the vault, and Antinora and Abigail Scheider recorded an 8.7 and 8.550, respectively, on the floor.

Senior Taylor Mulch led the way for the Rams, crossing the finish line in 26th place with a time of 19:00, while junior Gianna Citarella hit the chute in 44th at 19:26, and sophomores Jaelyn D’Amelio (48th) and Emily Furlong (57th) came in at 19:31 and 19:42, respectively. Sophomore Alexa Mulch rounded out the Rams’ effort by placing 78th overall with a time of 20:09.

Junior Trevor Middleton was Southern’s third finisher, placing 79th in 16:54, while sophomore Keoni Lieter was right behind him in 80th at 16:55.
