Local Man Dies After Collapsing Off Surf City Beach

A 55-year-old Manahawkin man died July 4 after losing consciousness while standing on a sandbar along Surf City’s Division Street beach, according to law enforcement officials.

Michael Scienski was rescued from the water by Surf City lifeguards and was found to be without a pulse, borough Police Chief Jack Casella said July 5.

“CPR was performed by lifeguards and police,” the chief said, adding Scienski was taken to Southern Ocean Medical Center where he was pronounced dead sometime later. “It doesn’t appear to be a drowning.”

Earlier news reports linked the incident with a drowning due to the rip current, but Casella said that wasn’t the case.

About 13 minutes later, on the North Eighth Street ocean beach, a 48-year-old man who was swimming with his son became fatigued.

“He was assisted by his son and the lifeguards,” Casella said, adding the man elected to be taken to SOMC to be examined. His son was not transported and appeared to be fine while sitting on the beach with his father.  G.G.S.
