Each year, as the calendar closes in on the holidays, the Long Beach Township construction department reaches out to its employees, and to contractors and Realtors in the local area, to help fill the food pantry at St. Francis Community Center in Brant Beach. In 2017, the department donated three carts full of food and a check for $4,250. This year, even more food was collected, and the monetary contribution totaled $6,800.

For nearly a decade, the township has donated food to pantry, which is organized by the center’s Human Concerns Department. Over the past few years, as business owners and employees inquired at the municipality about aiding the effort, the donation circle widened, and now includes more contributors and therefore more food and more financial assistance for the facility.

“We became aware of the need for this,” to assist those less fortunate in the community, said representatives of the township construction department. “Now, each year we raise more and more.”

Residents can drop off donations for the pantry in the St. Francis center foyer during operating hours: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m, and Thursday from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Anyone who needs food is also welcome to stop by; families or individuals receive a bag of food that can then be customized using the various loose items in the pantry.

The St. Francis food bank has a refrigerator and freezer, and can accept items such as unopened bread and bags of rolls in addition to non-perishables.

As noted on the St. Francis website, stfranciscenterlbi.org, the food pantry currently needs pasta, pasta sauce, chicken noodle soup, canned vegetables and soap, among other items.

For monetary donations, make checks payable to St. Francis Human Concerns. Checks may be mailed to St. Francis Human Concerns, 4700 Long Beach Blvd., Long Beach Twp., N.J. 08008, or dropped off at the center’s front desk.
