Long Beach Township Planning New Oyster Shellabration in October

Jul 25, 2018

A new “Shellabration” is coming to town. On Saturday, Oct. 6 – the weekend of the LBI Kite Festival – Long Beach Township is hosting its first-ever LBT Oyster Shellabration to celebrate local bay culture.

The new event, to be held from 1 to 6 p.m. outside the municipal building and in Bayview Park, in Brant Beach, will feature oysters and other food; beer, wine and non-alcoholic beverages; bands; games; eco-education; bay-related demos; and activities for kids. Oysters will be shucked on site, and area oyster farmers will make an appearance to talk about their work within Barnegat Bay.

Representatives of the township’s Oyster Recycling Program will also provide information on this community project, for which the municipality partners with Parsons Seafood, Stockton University, Jetty and its Jetty Rock Foundation and local restaurants to gather empty oyster shells to cure and later use to raise more oysters in a reef in Barnegat Bay.

Kitemaking and other family activities will be held that same Saturday, in Bayview Park, courtesy of the LBI Chamber of Commerce.

Shellabration organizers are currently seeking sponsors and ask those interested to call 609-361-1000.  —J.K.-H.
