“More” is the word in plans for Chowderfest 2017: more festival space, multiple band line-up, more beer taps, new “makers’” market – and more.

Save the date of Saturday, Sept. 30 when the weekend starts with the free Merchants Mart, leading up to Sunday, Oct. 1, when ticketholders will converge on Chowderfest.

“More room for everyone to enjoy this great festival atmosphere” is the advance word from the Southern Ocean County Chamber of Commerce when The SandPaper checked to see what’s new for this year’s fall feature event.

Starting with Saturday, the Merchants Mart, admission is free for the day when end-of-season bargains offer themselves to shoppers, to the tune of live LBI music, food favorites and other activities.

The band line-up from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. is Jimmy Brogan, White Rabbit and then The Impulsives.

This year a tent will be added just for Make Shift Row and its inspired, handmade products for sale.

More taps will serve flavorful beers and hard ciders, and there will be other refreshments to go down well with the gourmet food and localized specialties.

“Expanded grounds include more seating and elbow room for everyone, a Southern Ocean Chamber Partner and Sponsor lounge, and an additional tent for merchants,” added the chamber organizers.

Sunday, Oct. 1 brings the Chowder Cook Off Classic, as some of the best restaurants in the region square off to earn the votes of ticketholders who have taken the day to savor and decide their favorites. Categories are red, white and creative.

There are many benefits to opting for a VIP ticket. Beginning at 10 a.m., VIPs gain early access to the tents to taste the first samples, and also view the decorative booths created by each competitor. In addition to coveted early entry, VIPs get the official 2017 VIP shirt with purchase.

New this year is the Platinum VIP ticket, which in addition to early entry and shirt, also grants access to the new Beer Garden with big screen televisions and Bud Girls handing out giveaways. Platinum VIP level is limited to 150 tickets.

General admission begins at 11 a.m.

Great chowder is accompanied by great live music: the lineup scheduled to perform on Sunday is The Pickles, Ted Hammock and Jason Booth. Attendees can partake in the delicious food tent, grab a chair with added seating, avoid long lines with extra beer and cider taps, shop exclusive “Chowdawear” merchandise, and then vote and cheer on the winners at closing ceremonies scheduled to begin approximately 4 p.m.

Toddlers under 3 are admitted free. Tickets range from $10 for children up to age 12; $25 for general admission; $55 for VIP and $100 for Platinum VIP.

Tickets are on sale at chowderfest.com or by contacting the Southern Ocean County Chamber of Commerce at 609-494-7211; the visitor center, 265 West Ninth St., Ship Bottom; or email at info@sochamber.com. Facebook page is theofficialLBIChowderfest.
