MacArthur Now Only GOP Candidate on June 3 District Primary Ballot

May 02, 2018

Representative Tom MacArthur will run unopposed in the June 5 New Jersey 3rd Congressional District GOP Primary. His only primary challenger, Barnegat’s Martin Weber, was removed from the ballot by New Jersey Secretary of State Tahesha Way after Weber’s nominating petition was successfully challenged by Burlington County Republican Committee Executive Director Josh Foote.

Weber needed the signatures of 200 3rd District Republicans to be listed as a candidate on the ballot. According to Way, he originally submitted 241. But an investigation by Administrative Law Judge Joseph A. Ascione revealed that 40 signatories lived outside the 3rd, eight were Democrats and 10 were not registered voters at all. That left Weber with 183 valid signatures, 17 short of the requisite number, and MacArthur, a two-term incumbent, as the only Republican candidate, just as political newcomer Andy Kim will be the only name listed on the Democratic Primary ballot. —R.M.
