Make Voices Heard

Sep 13, 2017

To the Editor:

Island residents, please go the polls on Sept. 26 and vote on the school consolidation referendum. Make your voice heard. The consolidation question has been bogged down in our boardroom for many years. It is long since time that you, the people, were invited to weigh in. Please do not decline that invitation.

There has been a tremendous amount of misinformation about consolidation circulating in our midst – far too much to address here. But I will say this: The referendum on Sept. 26 is not about selling the LBI School. It is about consolidating from two elementary school buildings into one modernized elementary school building. The fate of the LBI School property is a separate issue, and yet to be determined.

If you care about consolidation/the referendum, do not rely on what your neighbor heard from a friend at the Acme who knows the cousin of someone on the board. Instead, go to our website, lbischools.org, and do some reading under the “Referendum” tab. Please take the time to learn the facts and, armed with those facts, come out and vote on Sept. 26.

On behalf of the children of the LBI Consolidated School District, I thank you in advance for your participation in the democratic process.

Note: There is one more public board of education meeting remaining before the referendum: 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 19 at the EJ School. Please come and feel free to ask any questions you may have. We’ll be there.

James Donahower, president

LBI Board of Education
