Man Peacefully Surrenders After Standoff With Barnegat Police

Jul 31, 2017

A Barnegat Township man was charged with obstructing the administration of law after police were called to respond to an apparent domestic disturbance July 26.

Lt. Keith Germain said that at 7:20 p.m., officers responded to a Cape Cod Avenue address for a report of a dispute. After an initial investigation, officers determined that a 48-year-old male subject was to be placed under arrest. Germain said the subject refused officer commands to exit his residence, locked himself in the residence and threatened to exit his residence using a firearm.

Officers determined that there was no one else in the residence with the subject and immediately worked to secure the scene while directing area residents to shelter in place. Police continued a dialogue with the subject in an attempt to safely resolve the incident.

After nearly six hours of intermittent dialogue, the subject surrendered and was taken into custody without incident. Officers secured and recovered three handguns, a shotgun, a 9mm carbine, numerous edged weapons, and approximately 3,000 rounds of ammunition from the residence.

The subject, whose identity was not disclosed, was sent to Southern Ocean Medical Center for observation.

Officers were assisted by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office and the Ocean County Regional SWAT Team, which provided tactical and logistical support and expertise; the Ocean County Sheriff’s Department, which provided K9 officers, negotiators, perimeter security, traffic control and logistical support; the Stafford Township Police Department, which provided an immediate mutual aid response and K9 officer; and the Barnegat Township First Aid Squad and MONOC, which provided emergency medical assets.

“We thank all those agencies, as well as the residents of Cape Cod Avenue and surrounding streets who were exceedingly cooperative with law enforcement, which allowed officers to focus on safely resolving the incident,” said Germain. —E.E.
