Marine Science Camps at Maritime Museum Registering

Jun 27, 2018

The New Jersey Maritime Museum in Beach Haven will be the site of marine science camps in July and August. Camps for children in grades K-8 will be held Monday through Friday on July 9 to 13, July 16 to 20, July 23 to 27, July 30 to Aug. 3 , Aug. 6 to Aug. 10 and Aug. 13 to 17. A special camp geared for teens will also be held July 16 to 20.

Taught by marine biologists and environmentalists, topics and activities include seining, plant and animal identification, water quality sampling and testing, plankton, megalodons, coral reefs and environmental awareness.

The camp is conducted by New Logic Educators, which was founded by Sherri Paris. She is a former employee in the state Department of Environmental Protection’s Bureau of Marine Fisheries.

“We want to show to the children what marine scientists do when we go out on the field to gather data,” said Paris, who has a marine science degree from Stockton University. “On one day, we’re going to go out kayaking to explore habitats.”

She said the camps will also feature an anti-straw campaign.

“It’s part of our education about the hazards of single-use plastic bags,” said Paris. “It’s good to bring this awareness to young children.”

Cost for all camps is $345 per week; a T-shirt and supplies are included. To register, call New Logic at 732-250-8124. —E.E.
