Marker From Dredging Project Dislodged By Stormy Surf

BEACHED BUOY: An unexpected fixture is temporarily lodged on the Surf City beach at Ninth Street – a massive buoy deposited by heavy waves. “It’s part of the dredging project and they’re coming to pick it up,” said Surf City Police Chief Jack Casella on Tuesday.

Surf City police posted a notice on its Facebook page Monday asking the public to steer clear of the metal-topped object: “... a channel marker washed up last night when the sea was churning. The owners of said channel marker have been made aware it made landfall and will be retrieving it as soon as possible; please keep your distance.”

Coast Guard crews were seen anchoring the object with the intent to stabilize it until it is removed.

“They are typically used to mark out where the pipe flows to the shore,” said Casella. Two Surf City police officers discovered the errant buoy at 7:20 p.m. April 15 when they were patrolling the beach.
