Matter of Choice

Nov 29, 2017

To the Editor:

I read with great interest the article on Choice students written by Gina Scala (“School, LBI Towns on Opposing Sides of Education Costs,” 11/22). One omission in the article was that Choice students’ parents or guardians do not pay property tax on Long Beach Island. Local property tax provides 76 percent of the funding for the schools. All current and planned enhancements to the schools are paid for by local property taxpayers.

If the current number of Choice students (42) remains in effect, then almost 20 percent of the student enrollment will be Choice students whose parents or guardians do not pay local property tax.

I hope that the school board will keep the local taxpayer in mind for any changes or enhancements to the program.
