Meet Democratic State and County Candidates on Saturday

Sep 13, 2017

You probably haven’t heard much about it, what with Hurricanes Harvey and Irma having sucked up not only the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean before depositing them on Texas and Florida but also the almost total attention of the media, but it is election season in New Jersey.

Voters will go to the polls on Tuesday, Nov. 7 to elect a new governor and all 120 members of the New Jersey Legislature as well as an Ocean County freeholder and local officeholders. That’s right, the election is less than two months away.

Southern Ocean County residents will have the chance to meet Democratic candidates for governor, senator, assembly members and freeholder this Saturday, Sept. 16 at an event sponsored by the Democratic Clubs of Barnegat, Lacey, Little Egg Harbor, Stafford, Long Beach Island and Waretown. It will be held at the Ocean Acres Community Center, located at 489 Nautilus Drive (attached to the Ocean Acres Elementary School) in Manahawkin from noon to 2 p.m. The event is free, although a $5 donation would be appreciated.

Expected to attend are the former Goldman Sachs executive, Democratic National Committee Finance Chairman, and U.S. Ambassador to Germany Phil Murphy, who is running against Republican Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno to replace Chris Christie, and Brian Corley White, a Toms River attorney who is challenging incumbent Republican Christopher Connors for New Jersey’s 9th District Senate seat.

Also expect to meet Jill Dobrowansky, the director of curriculum and instruction for the Wall Township public schools and a Manahawkin resident, and Ryan Young, a U.S. Army vet who served in Iraq and Afghanistan and also calls Stafford Township home. They are challenging GOP incumbents Brian Rumpf and DiAnne Gove for their 9th District Assembly seats. Helen Dela Cruz of Forked River, who is a convenience store owner and the Democrat who will oppose GOP incumbent Joseph Vicari in Ocean County’s sole freeholder race, is also expected to appear.  —R.M.
