Model Security

Aug 01, 2018

To the Editor:

I would like to express my appreciation to the Little Egg Harbor School District and the Little Egg Harbor Police Department. There have been many views expressed on school safety issues following school tragedies. The schools in Little Egg Harbor are locked. Emergency exits, of course, can still be opened from the inside only, setting off an alarm when they are opened.

To gain entrance, you have to ring a buzzer and state who you are and what is your business there. At that point, you are admitted into one of two doors. There you have to show your ID. Once cleared, you are then buzzed through a second door, where there is an officer sitting.

This is a model for all schools to be following. Kudos, LEH!

There are only two recommendations I would make. One is to have a chaperone on all the buses, at all times, so the bus driver can actually pay attention to his/her driving. The second is to have a stockade-type fence around the playground areas, not the current cyclone, see-through fencing.
