Monthly ‘Island Poets’ Group Starting in Beach Haven

Nov 08, 2017

Published poet Richard Morgan will conduct a monthly poetry group at the Beach Haven Public Library on the third Wednesday of each month at 10:30 a.m., beginning Wednesday, Nov. 15. A retired college administrator, Morgan is the author of the I Am Sea Glass trilogy and Hebrew Lessons: Poems From My Jewish Heart. He also coordinates the Poet’s Studio, which meets on the first Thursday of each month from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Long Beach Island branch of the Ocean County Library in Surf City.

He said the Beach Haven group will be called “Island Poets.”

“For now, it will probably be a little simpler than the Surf City group, which has been meeting for a few years,” said Morgan.

He said the meeting would start with a short lesson on writing poetry, followed by participants reading from their works.

“It is more important to first get your feelings on paper and then later figure out the structure,” he said. “Don’t worry about rhyming right away.”

Morgan said he encourages people to write because “I believe there is poetry in everyone.”

“You’d be surprised what can happen once you express your thoughts and emotions on paper.”
