Murder in Quiet Little Egg Harbor Neighborhood

May 23, 2018

An argument concerning a woman in a home on Maplewood Drive in Little Egg Harbor resulted in one young man stabbing and killing another. On Wednesday, May 16, at approximately 8:15 p.m., the Little Egg Harbor Police Department was dispatched to the quiet, leafy neighborhood, in response to a 911 call from the house reporting the altercation. While en route, the officers were additionally told by dispatch that a male had been stabbed inside the residence.

Upon their arrival, they found 25-year-old Kendrick Coley in the garage and immediately took control of him in order to ascertain what had taken place. Officers were then directed by a woman to the second-floor bedroom, where they discovered 28-year-old Richard Pone unresponsive with a stab wound to his left upper chest area. Pone was pronounced dead at the scene at 8:42 p.m.

The investigation by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Major Crimes Unit and Ocean County Sherriff’s Department CSI found there had been an altercation between Coley and Pone, where Coley retrieved a kitchen knife and allegedly stabbed Pone in the upstairs bedroom. The altercation allegedly resulted from Pone confronting Coley about an assault against a female at the residence that had taken place earlier.

Coley is in custody and charged with murder, unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.

The investigation is actively seeking answers as to what took place. The event posed no danger to the surrounding community. —P.J.
