Myriad Choices for Free Summer Concerts in the Parks

On summer evenings from one end of the Island to the other, music lovers can enjoy a wide variety of styles and genres in free outdoor concerts. Bring a chair and blanket, kick back and enjoy. But if the music moves you to get up and dance, well, go right ahead.

Long Beach Township has four separate days for live music, and new for this year are Sunday afternoon concerts at the 68th Street beach featuring the classic-rock sounds of Facedown from 1 to 3. Prior to Facedown, there will be an acoustic set beginning at noon. That schedule is Billy Walton, July 2; Dan Brown, July 9; Jimmy Brogan, July 16; Greg Warren, July 23 and Aug. 6; Joe Faronea, July 30; Sahara Moon, Aug. 13; Allison Stella, Aug. 20; Rob Connolly, Aug. 27; and Mike Konopka/Ned Ryerson, Sept. 3.

There will also be acoustic music on five Saturdays at Bayview Park from noon to 2 p.m., beginning with the Shoreside Duo (Lynne Menna and Ray DeAngels) on June 25. Other concerts are Frank Cervantes, Aug. 5; Mike Dougherty, Aug. 12; Joe Pahlow and Andrew Rusk, Aug. 19; and Michael Engesser, Sept. 2.

Both concerts series are sponsored by TD Bank.

Bayview Park is also the venue for Monday and Tuesday night concerts, running from 7 to 9 o’clock. Acme Market sponsors the Monday night series, which opens with the funk/rap/reggae sounds of Funk Shway on June 26. 

The rest of the schedule is Chris Fritz & the Impulsives (classic/modern rock)  July 3; Chad Miller and the Biscuits (classic/alt rock), July 10;  Double Negatives (classic/alt rock), July 17; Nectar and Ambrosia (rock, funk, jazz), July 24; Chris Burkhart and The Danksters (rock, reggae, club, ska), July 31; Greg Warren and Chevy Lopez (funk R&B, soul, jazz), Aug.7; Eric and the Shipwrecks (Top 40, classic rock, funk), Aug. 14; Off Their Rocker, with Amy Rankin (classic, modern rock), Aug. 21; and the Quattro, Aug. 28 (modern rock with a twist of Latin).

The energetic classic/modern rock sounds of Richie and the All-Stars/Mr. Lovejoy open the Tuesday concert, beginning June 27. There is no concert on July 4. The rest of the lineup is E. Street Shuffle (Bruce Springsteen tribute), July 11; The Kootz (classic rock), July 18; Jimmy and the Parrots (tribute to Jimmy Buffett), July 25; Steel Margarita, Ted Hammock and Jason Booth (Caribbean, classic/alt rock), Aug. 1; Mushmouth (rock ’n’ roll) Aug. 8; Best of the Eagles (Eagles tribute band), Aug. 15; Facedown (classic rock), Aug. 22; and Jimmy Brogan Trio and Garage Kept (classic rock), Aug. 29. Times are different for the finale, as Brogan goes on at 5 p.m. and Garage Kept begins playing at 6:30.

In Beach Haven, the Community Arts Program presents “Concerts on the Green” Wednesdays at Veterans Memorial Park at 7:30 p.m. The schedule is June 28, Garage Kept Band (classic rock); July 5, Sentimental Journey Band (big band); July 12, Carnaby Street Band (music of the British Invasion); July 19, Jimmy and the Parrots (tribute to Jimmy Buffett); July 26, Tequila Rose Band  (country); Aug. 2, The Kootz, (classic rock); Aug. 9, Past Times Bluegrass Band (bluegrass and country); Aug. 16, McLean Ave. Band (Irish); Aug. 23, Lighthouse 8 (music of the ’50s through ’80s); and Aug. 30, Elaine and Friends (classical, opera, Broadway.)

There are also two special children’s concerts featuring Makin’ Music/Rockin’ Rhythms Tuesdays, July 18 and Aug. 22, at 7 p.m.

Ship Bottom concerts are held at the waterfront park, 10th Street and Shore Avenue, on Thursdays at 7 p.m. The opener is July 6, featuring the very popular Shorty Long and the Jersey Horns with their mix of classic rock, R&B and soul.

The schedule continues with July 13, Victoria Watts (Top 40); July 20, Not Fade Away (Buddy Holly tribute); July 27, Mushmouth (rock ’n’ roll); Aug. 3, E Street Shuffle (Bruce Springsteen tribute); Aug. 10, Moses Livingston and the Raggamuffins (reggae); and Aug. 17, Triple Rail Turn (country).   

At Sunset Park in Harvey Cedars, six concerts are scheduled Wednesday evenings at 7, beginning with the Eagles tribute band Best of the Eagles playing on July 12. Other dates are July 19, No Discpiline (reggae); July 26, Facedown (classic rock); Aug. 2, Billy Walton band (rock and soul); Aug. 9, Verdict (reggae);  and Aug. 16, Jenny Barnes and the Great Unknown (blues).  

The classic rock sounds of The Kootz open the Monday night concert series in Barnegat Light at the bayfront gazebo, Seventh Street and Bayview, at 7. The rest of the line-up is July 24, Bullzeye Band (country rock); July 31, the Quattro (modern rock with a twist of Latin); Aug. 7, Lighthouse Band (classic rock); and Aug. 14, No Discipline (reggae).
