On May 9, an announcement regarding additions to Nautilus Park in Stafford Township was brought to the forefront and immediately drew some mixed reactions. In a statement released on the township’s Facebook page, it was announced that two new athletic fields have been scheduled for development and to be in place by next spring.

“Mayor John Spodofora and the Stafford Township Council are proud to announce that they have negotiated an arrangement with the Walters Group for the construction of two additional all-purpose athletic fields at the Nautilus Park Complex,” read the statement, posted to Facebook just before 2:30 p.m. “It is anticipated that these fields will be constructed in the spring of 2019, along with new bathroom facilities, anticipated to be complete by the fall of 2018.”

With several fields already located at the park – which is behind Ocean Acres Elementary School and the Ocean Acres Community Center – the additional fields are expected for development on a swath of land originally slated for reforesting, just north of a parking area at the northwest end of Buccaneer Lane. A map of the original park design was posted along with the announcement. The restroom facilities will be constructed next to the basketball courts.

“The construction will come at no cost to the taxpayers of Stafford Township as a result of aggressive negotiations on behalf of our residents,” the statement added, but made no mention of when such negotiations took place.

During the following days after the announcement, several residents posted comments praising the additional fields for Nautilus Park, while others questioned why other parks, particularly Lighthouse Park, had not been slated for immediate improvements, and others called on town officials to develop plans for additional recreational facilities and spaces – a new skate park and youth community center among them.
