New Coach at the Helm of Southern Regional Girls Soccer

Sep 08, 2017

Only three years removed from playing on the collegiate level, Kait Hartkopf is taking over as coach of the Southern Regional High School varsity girls soccer team. Competing in the Shore Conference A-South Divison, the Rams finished 3-12-2 last year.

“Being a new coach on this level makes me feel a little nervous but also very excited,” said Hartkopf, who teaches mathematics and special education at Southern. “I also have good support from my colleagues and administration.”

Hartkopf, who played defender at Georgian Court University in Lakewood, said the Rams have a strong nucleus of seniors, including midfielders Shannon Lytle, Sara Lockwood, Rachel Montesano, Jordan Festa and Sam Pawlik and forward Madisen Morehouse.

“I see them carrying the team this year,” she said. “In addition to our seniors, junior midfielder Grace Rickards and sophomore midfielder Megan Lockwood can be strong offensively.”

Hartkopf, who coached the junior varsity last year, said forward Ashley Altman and midfielder Brookelle Kline are two freshmen who may see varsity time.

“Our back trio of (junior) Maddie Johnson, (sophomore) Karagan Bulger and (sophomore) Shayna Kenduck is a younger group but strong,” she said.

Goalies are sophomores Riley Chenoweth Hafner, Lindsey Selert and Nellie Traut.

Rounding out the roster are senior defender Skylar Batullo, senior midfielder Lena Rodgers, junior midfielders Amanda Young and Kelsey Hemenway, junior defenders Kayla Singiser, Kali Buff, Hailey Butth and Sarah Harkness, junior forward Courtney Wechkus, sophomore midfielder Alex Mattner, sophomore forward Gianna Lemley, freshman midfielders Stef Leonard, Shay Johnson and Bri Bushman, freshman forward Jordan Rizzo and freshman defenders Kendall Adams and Lauren Sauer.

The team opened the season at home on Tuesday, Sept. 5, at 4 p.m. aganst Haddon Heights. Games against local schools include Saturday, Sept. 9, at Pinelands Regional at 11:30 a.m. and Monday, Oct. 23, against Barnegat, 4 p.m. on the home field. —E.E.
