‘New Jersey’s Bad Boy’ of Comedy at Surflight Sunday

Jul 25, 2018

Mike Marino, known as “New Jersey’s Bad Boy,” will perform at Surflight Theatre at 8:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 29 in a comedy show co-produced by Catch a Rising Star’s Suzy Yengo.

Tickets are $24.50 and may be purchased online at surflight.org, by phone at 609-492-9477, or at the box office.

A SandPaper review of Surflight’s current main stage production, “The Wedding Singer,” was critical of that show’s portrayal of New Jersey residents. But Marino gets a pass to poke fun at Garden State residents considering he was born in Jersey City 51 years ago. And, because he is Italian-American, he can also get away with Italian jokes, which is good considering he’s currently on a “Make America Italian Again Tour.”

Marino has made a career out of being an Italian from New Jersey for decades. He’s performed as a headliner in clubs, casinos, theaters and corporate events all across the country and landed a job as a regular sketch player on “The Tonight Show.” Marino has also appeared in many other television shows including “As the World Turns,” “One Life to Live,” “Becker,” “Nikki,” “Frasier” and “Party of Five” and movies including “Crooks,” “Pizza With Bullets,” “Hangin’ in Hedo,” and Steven King’s “Lucky Quarter” and “Criticized.”

So, let’s get an idea of what his humor is like, remembering his jokes are delivered with a thick North Jersey accent and attitude:

“A lot of people don’t believe I’m Italian because typically I don’t look it. I’m actually light skinned and I have blue eyes. I’m gonna tell you people in this room right now I’m a full-blooded Italian, both my parents were born in Italy. And I can prove it. I’m 50 years old and I still live at home with my mom.”

Opening for Marino will be Jon Bramnick, touted as “New Jersey’s funniest lawyer.” Hmmm, did you know such a thing existed? The host of the show is comedian John Kelly.

If you can’t make it to Beach Haven on Sunday evening, you’ve got another option. Catch a Rising Star is bringing Marino to Joey Harrison’s River House in Forked River at 8 p.m. this Thursday, July 26. Tickets for that show are $21.60 ($35 for VIP seating).  —R.M.
