Next Classical Music Jam at Holy Innocents’ Church  Scheduled for Feb. 9

Jan 09, 2019

Musicians and music lovers are invited to attend a Classical Music jam session on Saturday, Feb. 9, from 1 to 3 p.m. at Holy Innocents’ Episcopal Church in Beach Haven. Open to all who play or sing classical music, at any level or age, the event is a loosely formatted performance, free and open to the public, inside the church’s Fellowship Hall.

The Classical Music Jam, formerly sponsored by the LBI Arts Council, will henceforth be incorporated into the music outreach program at Holy Innocents’, co-organizer Barbara Wheeler explained. Holy Innocents’ Music Minister Ellen Dondero is in charge of the event.

Though the focus is on classical music, the gathering is an opportunity for people to play or sing and listen to classical music, jazz or show tunes.

Musicians are asked to bring their instrument(s), music stands if convenient, and (clearly labeled) music to share. The church donates the space and has a piano available. Attendees are asked to bring a light refreshment to share and to make a monetary donation to help defray costs.

The song selections and instrumentation will be determined based on who shows up. Ideally the event promotes spontaneous collaborations, whereby learning is tantamount to performance; the goal is to cultivate a “jam” vibe rather than an open mic feel.

The first jam was held in February 2017, born of a desire within the community to create an open, inclusive environment in which various configurations of instruments and vocalists could make music together. Wheeler, a retired music therapist, originated the idea to encourage more classical music on LBI. About 50 people attended the first event, ranging in age from 8 to 70. Subsequent events have been held in the summer and winters since.
