Novak to Head Barnegat Emergency Management

Dec 13, 2017

Barnegat Township Committeeman John J. Novak has been appointed the municipality’s emergency management coordinator, effective Jan. 1. Novak, who last month was re-elected to the committee, said he will not receive compensation.

Novak will be replacing Richard Dugan, who will be retiring as police chief next month.

“After he retires, Lt. Keith Germain will become police chief,” said Novak, who is the committee’s liaison to the police department. “However, statutes require that the coordinator has to live in Barnegat, and Keith is not a Barnegat resident. Keith will still be heavily involved in emergency management operations. He just won’t be the coordinator.”

Novak said that because of his background in law enforcement, he is familiar with emergency management-related issues and that he has volunteered his time to help out in emergencies as a committeeman or a private resident.

“I was out there pitching in during the big forest fire (2007) and Superstorm Sandy (2012),” he said. “I care a lot about my town, so when there is a major emergency affecting the community, I want to be there to help out.” E.E.
