Novins Planetarium Gets Spooky with Halloween Laser Shows and PJ Nights for Kids

Oct 04, 2017

With Halloween just weeks away, youngsters can enjoy a scary – or not-so-scary – celestial experience at the Robert J. Novins Planetarium at Ocean County College.

Laser Fright Light, for ages 8 and above, features favorite Halloween hits set to haunting lasers. The playlist includes “Close Encounters of the Third Kind,” “Frankenstein,” “Monster Mash,” “Purple People Eater,” “Thriller” and other hits, as well as a horror movie theme medley featuring the films “Halloween,” “Insidious,” “Jaws,” “Nosferatu” and “Psycho.”

The laser shows, which do contain some spooky scenes, are scheduled at 8:30 p.m. on Oct. 7, 14, 21 and 28, and at 2 p.m. on Oct. 9, 21 and 28.

For younger children ages 2 and up the planetarium offers its Not-So-Scary Halloween Laser Show, set to the Kidz Bop versions of popular Halloween songs, at 11:30 a.m. on Oct. 7, 9, 14, 21 and 28.

Laser show tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and OCC alumni, and $7 for children 12 and under (unless otherwise noted).

Mid-month, Novins is offering new PJ Night, Host A Little Ghost & The Story of The Mystical Mums, at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 13. Kids ages 4 and older are invited to wear their pajamas to meet the book authors and hear the story read aloud under the stars, in addition to other activities and fun.

And, at 6 p.m. on Oct. 20, head to the planetarium for another PJ Night – Finding Alien Worlds – for ages 5 and up. Activities include building an alien, creating an alien world and learning how our own world will become a part of history. Participants will boogie to Halloween music and imagine life on a planet made of slime.

PJ Night tickets are $10 for all ages.

To purchase tickets, visit ocean.edu or call 732-255-0343. Tickets are available at the door, but advance purchase is recommended.  —J.K.-H.
