Nowhere to Go

Jul 26, 2017

To the Editor:

A group of people from Delaware purchased the Cedar Run Apartments and is in the process of renovating the entire complex. They then decided that they will evict several members of the community for apparently no reason or for one they made up, non-payment of rent.

I can prove I paid my rent through my bank where I had set up bill auto-pay. I also have the bank statements showing the money going into their account or into the account of the former owner.

Others here are speculating that these new owners want us out so that they can, after fixing up the places, rent them out as condos and demand a higher rent.

I am an 80-year-old disabled veteran with a small monthly income and cannot afford to go anywhere else to live. My meager Social Security check also goes to support my old Thai wife and grandson who live in Thailand. And because I am old (but very fit) I cannot get a job anywhere. What will I do? Where can I go? I can’t afford to go back to Thailand and I see no light at the end of the tunnel.

I did write letters to various groups who are supposed to protect tenants rights and others in government. But will they help? I feel I was let down by the Veterans Administration for not granting me the compensation that I earned and by government officials who seem not to care about us.
