Ocean Acres Civic Association to Host School Board Candidates Night on Oct. 10

Oct 04, 2017

With just about a month to go before residents within Stafford Township and Southern Regional borders cast their votes during the next round of school board elections, the Ocean Acres Civic Association is intent on making sure many residents get to hear what this year’s candidates have to say.

On Tuesday, Oct. 10, from 7 to 9 p.m., the association is hosting its annual Candidates Night. All residents are welcome and encouraged to attend the meeting at the Ocean Acres Community Center in Manahawkin.

For the Stafford Township Board of Education’s three available seats, 10 candidates have thrown their hats into the ring in what should be a hotly contested election. The list of candidates includes incumbents Michael Benson and Deborah M. Lyons, along with challengers Gerald “Jerry” Simonelli, Patricia Formica, Michael Dunlea, Michelle Weiss, Steven E. Derion, Joshua Smith, Suzanne Caporrino and Erin Sharkey-Coxen.

As is the case with Benson and Lyons, board member Wendy Cotter’s term is expiring at the end of the year, but Cotter has opted not to seek re-election. Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 7. With 10 candidates in the hunt for the board this fall, Stafford’s race is the largest in the county, ahead of Toms River Regional Schools (9) and Barnegat (8).

In comparison, the two seats open for the Southern Regional Board of Education have only two candidates in the mix, both of whom are current board members: Tom Serpico and Heather Tatur.  —D.B.
