Ocean County Bus Offering Tuesday Service in Barnegat

May 10, 2017

On Tuesdays Barnegat Township residents can get weekly bus transportation to the Manahawkin shopping corridor on Route 72 through the county’s Ocean Ride program.

At the May 2 township committee meeting, Mayor Albert Bille said the county wants to run it on a trial basis. The bus would go door-to-door picking up residents beginning at 10:30 a.m.

“They would get to their shopping destination by around noon and would be picked up at approximately 2 for their ride home,” said Bille. “They are limited to 15 passengers, so it would be on a  first-come, first-save basis. If it all goes well, they will put it on as a permanent service in their next year’s brochure.”

Donna Manno, deputy township clerk, said the fare is $1 for each way.

“The service is strictly for shopping,” said Manno. “It is not for doctors or social services appointments. People will be able to go to Kmart, Walmart, ShopRite, Kohl’s, Target at Stafford Business Park and many of the other stores.”

Up until last year, Barnegat had its own community bus for more than 10 years. Township Administrator Martin Lisella said that ironically, the bus service had to be shut down due to county funds drying up.

“But what we had was a duplication of county services,” he said. “It didn’t make sense to keep that bus going when the county can also provide the same service.”
