Ocean County Library Announces Makers Day Programs

Mar 05, 2018

People can put their creative talents into action when Ocean County Library branches celebrate New Jersey Makers Day on Saturday, March 10, with a wide range of activities. Some programs will also be held on Thursday and Friday, March 8 and 9.

According to the New Jersey Makers Day website, the day “is a statewide celebration of making and maker culture. Our primary goal is to enhance community engagement and facilitate connections among New Jersey residents by exploring new and interesting opportunities for community-wide education, entrepreneurship and hands-on learning experiences.”

The Stafford branch begins the festivities on Friday, March 9, when participants will have a DIY Garden Party. From 1 to 2 p.m., the activities will consist of building gnome and fairy houses. From 2 to 3, participants will build bird feeders from upcycled materials. The last activity, from 3 to 4, involves making a garden out of the meeting room with upcycled materials.

On Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m.,  the first event is a visit from Insectropolis to learn about bugs that live in gardens. From 11 to noon, participants will create a variety of crafts including making rock slime and painting river rock. From noon to 1, the Master Gardeners from the Rutgers Extension Service will teach garden skills. The activities conclude with a tea beginning at 1.

At the Barnegat branch, Makers Day is observed March 9 with crafts, technology and building projects from 3 to 4 p.m.

Shrinky dink jewelry or key chains is the theme of a project on March 10, from 11 a.m. to noon, at the Waretown branch.

The Long Beach Island branch kicks the festivities off with “Mini-Makers in Action” on Friday, March 9, from 10 to 11 a.m. It will feature STEAM (Science Technology, Enginering, Arts and Mathematics) stories. It is geared for ages 18 months to 4 years. On March 10, families are invited to the branch for art, sensory experiences and experiments from 2:30 to 4 p.m.

At the Little Egg Harbor branch, participants can create artbots on March 10 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. From 2 to 3 p.m., paper art featuring origami and other forms takes place.

The Tuckerton branch celebrates on Thursday and Friday, March 8 and 9, with quilt block square making. Thursday’s program runs from 3 to 4 p.m. while Friday’s runs from 2 to 3 p.m.
