Ocean County Republicans have nominated Lacey Township Committeeman Gary Quinn to replace Freeholder John C. Bartlett Jr., who announced recently that he will end his campaign for a 14th term due to deteriorating health. Bartlett, 71, will leave office when his current term expires on Dec. 31.

The GOP held a special convention last week to select a candidate to succeed Bartlett, who is the longest-serving freeholder in New Jersey. A total of 10 candidates were considered to fill the spot and run alongside Gerry P. Little in the November election, including Barnegat Councilman John Novak and Stafford Councilwoman Sharon McKenna.

A screening committee gave its support to Quinn, and there was no challenge to the decision.

Quinn, 62, owned Eastport Builders, and is a former mayor of Lacey, where he also served as a school board president.

The Ocean County Board of Chosen Freeholders is comprised of five members. No Democrat has been elected to the office since 1989. —J.K.-H.
