Old Barnegat High School Seeks Classmates for Reunion

Jun 21, 2017

Over the summer, the old Barnegat High School reunion committee will be seeking classmates and former students for a reunion on Sunday, Sept. 17, from 2 to 6 p.m. at the Holiday Inn in Manahawkin.

Jeanne Bonnell, committee chairwoman, said tickets are $35 per person. Luncheon choices are boneless breast of Chicken Francaise, Chateaubriand and Pan Seared Salmon.

The old high school opened in 1930 and closed in 1957, when Southern Regional High School opened.

“The reunion is not limited to graduates,” said Bonnell, who received her diploma in 1949. “We welcome all who attended. Included in this group would be those who went on to graduate from Southern Regional from 1958 to ’60.”

Bonnell said previous reunions were held in 2002, 2006, 2009, 2012 and 2015.

“The one in 2002 was very special because that was the first reunion we ever had,” she said. “There were about 540 who came. Some classes might have held reunions, but that was the first time we held one for all the classes, for all the students as well as staff. People came from all over the country.”

She said the event in 2012 drew 191.

“We’re going to be spending a lot of time updating our lists,” said Charles Moffett, committee secretary, who lives in Beach Haven and also graduated in 1949. “We hope to get a lot of people interested in attending. They have really been special times.”
