Outside Shower Pipes are Cold Snap Casualties in Harvey Cedars

Nov 15, 2017

Last weekend’s weather felt more like January than November, and in Harvey Cedars, the borough reported 21 water pipe breaks. Police Chief Robert Burnaford said all the leaks occurred in outdoor shower pipes.

“People either forget or did not yet winterize them,” said Burnaford. “It got down to 20 degrees overnight Friday into Saturday morning. As it got a little milder, the pipes expanded, and then they broke.”

In each instance, public works crews were notified. They shut the water off and then notified the homeowners.

“Most of them were called (in) by neighbors, and some were noticed by officers on routine patrol,” said Burnaford. “If you’re outside, you’ll hear them when they break and the water rushing out.”

Burnaford said it was fortunate that no major mains were broken.

“If you have that like in the bathroom or the kitchen, you’ll get water damage in the house,” he said. “This was probably the earliest I’ve seen such cold weather in early November. We don’t usually have these problems until December. Hopefully people will start getting their homes ready for winter.” E.E.
