Outstanding Service

Jan 10, 2018

To the Editor:

I am writing this letter to call attention to the outstanding service that the Surf City police officers provide every day throughout the year.

After receiving an alert during last Thursday’s snowstorm that the heating system in my house in Surf City had stopped working, I drove from North Jersey to check on it. I walked through hip-deep snow to get into the house and fix the system so the pipes would not freeze. When I was about to leave, the snow had drifted onto the street from the bay and was now piled even higher.

In attempting to pull away from the house, my SUV got stuck in the snowbank. I called the Surf City police to alert them that my vehicle was blocking the street due to the snowdrift and to ask them if they knew of a local towing service that could pull the car out. Within minutes, two Surf City police officers arrived. They attempted to pull me out of the snowbank by pushing the car. When that failed, they called for a public works vehicle to be dispatched. When the vehicle arrived, one of the officers, Ptl. Michael Allen, attached a tow chain to my car and pulled it free. The Public Works Department then plowed the street.

I want to publicly thank these fine officers for their assistance and kindness, particularly Officer Allen, who went out of his way to ensure that I was safe and could proceed on my way. I also want to acknowledge the Surf City public works employee who supported the officers.
