To the Editor:

My daughter, Marie Smith of St. Louis, Mo., met Gabe Lackey of Annapolis, Md., nearly four years ago at a Notre Dame vs. Navy football game in South Bend, Ind. Gabe was in his first year as a Navy midshipman and Marie was a sophomore at St. Mary’s College-Notre Dame. They had an instant connection when they found out that despite having grown up 1,000 miles apart, they had both vacationed in Surf City a block from each other when they were children.

During the summer of 2014, Marie’s family was finally able to meet Gabe in Surf City, where Marie has vacationed every summer of her life. Marie’s grandmother, Joan (Carey) Smith, and her siblings have spent summers in Surf City for over 50 years. One of the first places the couple visited together on the Island was Barnegat Lighthouse. They have returned there every summer since and it has become a special spot for them.

So it was only fitting when Gabe planned his proposal that it would be at the lighthouse during Marie’s family’s annual visit. With Gabe’s parents and Marie’s parents and sisters hiding behind the bushes until the very last minute, a perfect proposal was pulled off with pictures to prove it.

Both families were thrilled to be part of this very special event and are very excited for the newly engaged couple.

Carol Smith
