Pinelands Football Team Loses Season Opener

Sep 05, 2018

The Pinelands Regional High School football team opened its 2018 season last Thursday night against Mater Dei.

The Wildcats would probably like a mulligan.

Mater Dei, located in Middletown, is a small school, with under 400 students. But it is a New Jersey State Interscholastic Non-Public Group II powerhouse, winning that section’s state championship in 2016 and making it to another title game in 2017 before losing to St. Joseph, Hammonton.

The Seraphs must have thought long and hard about that 30-14 defeat over the off-season because they came out swinging on Thursday, taking a 35-0 lead over the visitors by halftime before cruising to a 41-8 win.

The evening’s only highlight for the Wildcats was a third-quarter 5-yard TD pass from senior QB Garret Brown to classmate Andrew Bartlett.

Pinelands will hit the road again – as it will have to all season due to its home field being reconstructed – on Friday, Sept. 7 when it visits Shore Regional for a game set to kick off at 7 p.m.

The Rams of Southern Regional will open their season this Friday at home against Jackson Memorial. Kick-off will be at 7 p.m.

The Barnegat Bengals will kick off their season at the same time on Friday when they host Jackson Liberty with another 7 p.m. start.  —R.M.
