The state tournament road came to end for the Pinelands Regional High School boys tennis team on Tuesday, May 23, and, unfortunately, the final result didn’t lead to any joyous moments for the top-seeded Wildcats, as they dropped a 3-2 decision to second-seeded Delsea in the NJSIAA South Jersey Group II championship.

After knocking off fourth-seeded West Deptford in the semifinals on May 18 and getting back to the section final for a second straight year, the Wildcats (18-4) received victories from senior first singles player Tim Kelleher, who defeated Dom Cerana, and senior second singles player Adam Raynor, who ousted Billy Connors.

However, the first doubles team of Carl Olsen and Anthony Staton lost to Kyle McBride and Frank Knapp, while the second doubles team of Arpit Gainder and Andrew Schulz dropped their match to Steve Coates and Ben DeBroekert, leaving senior third singles player Shane Nourie with the task of trying to finish off the Crusaders (16-2). Nourie split the first two sets with Delsea’s Jake Carlson, but fell short in the third set.

The section title was Delsea’s second during the past three seasons. Last season, Pinelands lost to Haddonfield, 4.5-0.5, in the final.

Last week against West Deptford, Kelleher bounced Tyler Stauffer, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), while Raynor cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win over Jake Jackson, and Nourie won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4, over Ryan Zuzulock. Olsen and Staton came back after losing the first set to get by Corey Fischer and Kyle Whitehouse, 2-6, 6-4, 10-2, at first doubles, while Gainder and Schulz lost, 7-5, 6-3, against Max Finocchi and Dan Tachdjian at second doubles. —D.B.
