Pinelands Soccer Hopes to Build on Last Year’s Successes

Sep 07, 2018

With only one starter, center fullback Caden Sundermann, lost to graduation, the Pinelands Regional varsity boys soccer team looks to be a major player in the Shore Conference.

Last year, the Wildcats went 17-4-2 under first year head coach Nino Scotto Di Carlo. They won the Shore Conference B South Division, reached the quarterfinals of the Shore Conference tournament and the semifinals of the South Jersey Group III tournament.

“I am hoping that last year’s success has made these seniors hungry for more, and so far this preseason it seems that way,” Di Carlo said. “The big game experience is certainly invaluable. I think it is going to help us with our difficult schedule this season.”

This year, the Wildcats went undefeated in the Toms River North Kickoff Classic and won its scrimmages against Toms River South and Middletown North.

“We intend on having another successful season under our current senior leadership,” said Di Carlo, who formerly played for Pinelands as well as Stockton University. He was also an assistant to former coach Jason Asch.

Returning seniors include striker Dominic DosSantos (14 goals), forward Kieran Sundermann (18 goals), midfielder Anthony Diaz (13 goals), midfielder Aniello Lubrano and fullbacks Frank Aguilar and Luke Mathis.

Juniors include midfielder Antony Aguilar, goalkeeper Logan Johnson, fullbacks Alexander Dimm, Matthew Albanese, Tyler Piazza, midfielder Jack Doyle and forward Creed Nass.

Sophomores are midfielder Johnny Hart, goalie Gavin Harris and forward Carter Mathis.

As far as filling Caden Sundermann’s shoes, Di Carlo said, “We are still working on the center back position We’re plugging in different guys to see what works.”

The Wildcats open at home on Thursday, Sept. 6, 3:45 p.m., against Toms River East.  —E.E.
