Pinelands, Southern Kick Off Basketball Season With Wins

Dec 20, 2017

The Pinelands Regional varsity boys basketball team is one-third of the way to matching last year’s victory total with a 47-42 home win against Barnegat last Friday.

Junior forwards Andrew Schulz and Devon Kidd led the way with 16 and 11 points, respectively. They combined for five of the team's eight three-point baskets, which head coach Fred Johnson said was the key.

“We were up 19-9 after the first quarter,” he said. “We were shooting really well, especially from three-point range.”

Senior guard Mike Revello scored 23 points for the visiting Bengals, who last year set a school record with 18 wins and got as far as the semifinal round of the NJSIAA South Jersey Group II playoffs before losing to Camden, 50-30. The next top scorer was senior guard Carson Francisco with seven points.

For the Southern Regional varsity boys basketball team, senior guard Jake DuBois scored 24 points as the Rams topped visiting Atlantic Tech, 61-44. DuBois also had three assists and five steals. Senior forward Thomas Foster scored 13 points, and also had seven rebounds and two blocks.

“Our pressing defense created some turnovers early and Jake got some easy layups,” said head coach Eric Fierro, whose Rams went 11-15 last season. “Foster’s first points came on a steal and a breakaway dunk.”

He also said other seniors besides DuBois and Foster had solid outings.

“We set the tone early and didn’t let up,” Fierro said.  —E.E.
